Offered for sale is an antique sterling gumbo soup spoon in the pattern "Violet" by Whiting first produced in 1905. It has a round bowl, measures 6 3/4" long . Monogrammed in script. It is signed sterling on the back with the retailers mark "Salvatore Desio" of Washington, DC. The Violet pattern was designed by Charles Osborne, Whiting's most famous and important designer. In the 1880's he worked for Tiffany for a period of time before returning to Whiting. His designs are some of the most important of the American aesthetic movement. Whiting as absorbed by Gorham in 1926.
