Original 17th Century Engraving
Nicolas Visscher - 'Villagers by the Grand Fireplace'

This listing is for an original, antique engraving, or etching, from the 1600's. It is by Nicolas Visscher and titled 'Villagers by the Grand Fireplace'. The Visscher family were known art and map dealers in Amsterdam in the 17th Century. Nicolas, in fact, was featured as a mapmaker on the 'Antiques Roadshow'. I have seen various spellings for his first name - Nicolas, Nickolas, Nikolas, Nicolaus. I have also seen two date ranges for his life (1618-1709) & (1618-1679). The engraving depicts a group of villagers gathered near a large fireplace. An examination of the entire print shows a lot of detail, even in unexpected areas of the background. The image area is approximately 14 x 18 1/2 inches. The bottom margin is lettered as follows:
Lower Left: Cornelius Visscher Sculpsit
Center: Ad. van Ostade Pinxit (Adriaen van Ostade)
Lower Right: Nicolaus Visscher Excudit
